Barton: According to some sources, Barton is a derivative of two Old English words, "Bere" meaning barley, and "tun" meaning an enclosure. In other words, a Barley farm or farmyard of sorts.

Generation 1

1. ROSWELL / ROBERT Barton. Born in Virginia or Kentucky. ROSWELL / ROBERT died aft Apr 1828 (last known record of Roswell Apr 1828 term of Clark Co., IL Circuit Court).

NOTE: Our primary source for this, our senior patriach's given name(s), are his daughter's Matilda and Nancy's marriage records. By the time Nancy (nee Barton) Guess-Wiseman-Canaday married, at least for the fourth time, the State of Illinois had started including parent's names on the application. On her 1881 application, for her marriage to Henry Ferguson, her father's name was listed as Robert Barton (her mother's name was not given, the line was left blank - however, her mother Susannah (nee Mitchell) Barton-Peters' probate in 1863 did list Nancy Canaday as a daughter and one of her heirs - so we know, at the least, that Matilda and Nancy shared the same mother - therefore one can assume the same Barton father).

Roswell's oldest daughter, Matilda, married a second time in 1888 (after she was widowed by her first husband, John Pearson). On Matilda's 1888 marriage application for marriage to John Holston, her parents were listed as Roswell Barton and Susannah Mitchell.

After finding both of these marriage applications, we were able to find several documents on Roswell Barton, in the Clark Co., Illinois area. The only Robert Barton we found was too young to have fathered Susannah's children, and since the younger Robert was not listed on Susannah's probate records, we assume that Robert was not a child to our Roswell and Susannah either [could be a nephew?].

That said, perhaps Roswell's middle name was Robert, or the reverse. In either case, it would not surprise if this man, Roswell or Robert, found ocassion to need to use switch usage of his given name.

ROSWELL married SUSANNAH Mitchell, daughter of prob. JOHN Mitchell, in poss. Kentucky. SUSANNAH was born in abt. 1792 in KY, she died on 10 Dec 1863, in York Twp., Clark Co., Illinois, she was abt. 71.

They had the following children:

  • i. Matilda E. (1819-1910)
  • ii. Martha/ Anne Eliza
  • iii. Nancy (1825-aft. 1881)
  • iv. JOHN M.[MITCHELL] (1829-1905)

FOR CONSIDERATION ONLY : All leads on the name Roswell Barton take us to the Culpepper and Fauquier Co's in VA and to the Pendleton Co., Kentucky area. However, nothing has been proven, still, based on approximate age, and his children's declaration of their father's birth location on censuses and other documents, it does look like this, our Roswell, could be the same Roswell that married Martha McCrey on 15 Aug 1799 in Pendleton Co., KY. Or at least, could be from the same line.

The Roswell and Martha mentioned above had, according to various other researchers posting, at least four children together. One researcher indicated that she believes that Martha's Roswell may have abandoned his family with her, and then married our Susannah. She further wondered whether Roswell abandoned Susannah as well, moving perhaps to Missouri.

If you have any information that could shed some light on this theory, or any other, I would love to hear more. Please e-mail me. For the record, our Roswell was a less than stellar individual, the last record we have on him is a court record for an attempted murder - which could be why he left the Clark Co., Illinois area.

ROSWELL and SUSANNAH apparently divorced (perhaps after a disappearing act on Roswell's part, or it is possible that he died, we just don't know), she second married Simon Andrew Peters, on 29 Oct 1828 in Sugar Creek, Vigo Co., Indiana (across the state line from Clark Co., IL). Simon was b. bet. 1791-90, in Vermont, died bet. 1838-40, prob. in Indiana or Illinois.

They had the following children:

  • i. Samuel S. (1834-1909)
  • ii. Oliver (1838-bef 1910)

Generation No. 2

1. JOHN M. [prob. Mitchell] Barton. Born abt 1829 in prob. Kentucky. JOHN M. died in Jewell Co., Kansas, on 8 Feb 1905; he was 76. Buried in Esbon Cemetery; Jewell Co., Kansas. NOTE: John's middle name Mitchell has not been documented, but was passed down through his son Rosel's line in the form of oral history. The letter M. is recorded, and I do suspect, since his mother was a Mitchell, that the middle name Mitchell is correct.

On 14 Apr 1859 when JOHN M. was 30, he first married MARY ELIZABETH 'Lizzie' Haddix, in Clark Co., Illinois. Born abt 1840 in Illinois. We believe that MARY ELIZABETH 'Lizzie' died in prob. Clark Co., Illinois, aft 1863; she was abt 23.

NOTE: We do not know who Mary Elizabeth's parent's were, she died so young, there is little known of her. We do theorize that she may have been a daughter to John Haddix, b. 31 Jul 1818, in Warren Co., OH, d. 16 Aug 1849, prob. in Clark Co., Illinois. That John married Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Smith on 25 Jan 1841, in Clark Co., Illinois. They had at least four children together: Harriett Angeline, Sarah A., Marry Ann and John William.

I theorize that John Haddix was married before Elizabeth Smith, and that he was a widower, with a child (an infant), when he and Elizabeth married in 1841. They married, about the year that my Mary Elizabeth 'Lizzie' was born. Could it be that John's first wife died in child birth (we know per a Smith/Beck Family Bible, in the ownership of, I believe, Sarah A.'s line, that our Mary Elizabeth's birth was not listed, or credited to Elizabeth Smith-Haddix [later to marry John Beck] as one of her birth child. Perhaps our Lizzie was her step-daughter.

Still, on an Edgar Co., Illinois 1850c, I believe that our young Elizabeth Haddoct [Haddix?] was listed as living in the same household as the recently widowed, Elizabeth Haddoct: 1850 Aug 28 - Dist. 19, Edgar Co., IL - M432/R105/P126 - John Smith age 54, b. MO, Occ: Shoemaker; Elizabeth age 32, b. Richland Co., OH; Henry age 30, b. Perry Co., OH; Elizabeth Haddoct age 27, b. Parke Co., OH; Mary E. Haddoct age 11, b. Richland Co., OH; James E. Haddoct age 11M, b. Edgar Co., IL; Margaret Haddoct age 19, b. Edgar Co., IL; Harriett Haddise.

Not all details on this census work perfectly with my theory, but not all censuses are 100% correct either. And, I could go on more with details that make me believe this connection possible, but for space and off Barton topic sake, I won't here (please e-mail if you'd like to converse more on the Haddix line).

Still, we do know that our Mary Elizabeth must of had a strong tie to the name Smith - her youngest son's middle name was Smith - Jerome Smith Barton. Obviously more research and perhaps a major stroke of luck is needed to go back further in our Haddix line.

They had the following children:

  • i. Ida Doreltha (1858-1936)
  • ii. Rosel Edward 'Pete' (1861-1948)
  • iii. JEROME SMITH 'Rome' (1863-1936)

On 17 Dec 1864 when JOHN M. was 35, he second married Synthia Ann Medley, in Clark Co., Illinois. They were divorced in 1878/9 in Smith Co., Kansas. NOTE: John and Synthia hadn't lived together for over ten years when John finally filed for a divorce.

On 7 Oct 1879 when JOHN M. was 50, he third married Nancy B. Glenn, daughter of Thomas Marrow Glenn & Anna Caroline Scott, in Smith Co., Kansas. Born abt 1828 in Waynesville Twp., Dewitt Co., Illinois. Nancy B. died poss. in Kansas. The last source, found to date, on Nancy is the 1895 Kansas State Census.

Generation No. 3

2. Ida Doreltha Barton. Born on 4 Sep 1858 in Clark Co., Illinois. Ida Doreltha died in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee, on 23 Sep 1936; she was 78. Buried on 25 Sep 1936 in Cedar Hill Cemetery; Cora, Smith Center, Smith Co., Kansas. On 18 Nov 1875 when Ida Doreltha was 17, she first married Lewis Cass Brown , Sr., son of L. C.? Brown, in Cora Twp., Smith Co., Kansas. Born in Jul 1850 in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Indiana. Lewis Cass died in Glasco, Cloud Co., Kansas, on 14 Nov 1921; he was 71.

They had the following children:
  •   i. Anna E. (1876-1970)

  • viii. Nona A. (1897-1981)
Between Nov 1921- Jul 1922 [prob. bet. Mar-Jul 1922], after Lewis' death, when Ida Doreltha was abt. 64, she second married a Mr. Hendricks. NOTE: Based on searches in the Smith Co., KS area for poss. Mr. Hendricks', the most likely - unproven - candidate for Ida's second husband is a fellow named William F. Hendricks, b. abt 1862, in Illinois. This fellow was listed on Smith Center, Kansas' 1920 census on page 110B, Ida was listed on page 113B of that same census. I could find no other Hendricks' in the area. Their marriage was shortlived and Ida went back to using her former married name, Brown, until she died. She, and her first husband Lewis, share a headstone at Cedar Hill Cemtery, in Cora, Smith Co., Kansas.

3. Rosel Edward 'Peat/Pete' Barton. Born on 24 Jul 1861 in prob. Clark Co., Illinois. Rosel Edward 'Pete' died in Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, on 28 Jan 1948; he was 86. Buried on 31 Jan 1948 in Green Lawn Cemetery; Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri.

Rock   Co., Wisconsin. ALMA CHARITY died bet 1920-30, poss. in Iowa. They separated in abt 1905. NOTE: On son, Benjamin Harrison Barton's death certificate, his mother is listed as Shirley Wells. ALL other sources indicate that Rome's first wife's name was Alma Charity Wells, I would guess that the name Shirley must have been a clerical error.

They had the following children:

  •   i. Jesse J. (1884-1928)
  • ii. BENJAMIN HARRISON (1885-1939)
  • iii. Bonnie Mabel (1889-)
