| Bolter: This interesting English medieval surname with spellings that include Bold, Bolder, Bolt, Bolter, Boulter, Bulter and Boulder. It may be derived from a number of possible sources. Firstly, it may be of topographical origin for a person who resides at a holl or small farm. The derivation is from the pre 7th century Old Danish element "bol", and was found in areas particularly the Northwest where the Scandinavian influence was particularly strong. Secondly the name may be occupational and demoting a sifter of meats, from the Old French "Boulter" meaning in effect a cook or chef. King Henry V1 is recorded as having "six butlers" in his household. Thirdly, it can be occupational for a maker of arrows and bolts, from the Middle English word "bolt". Finally, it may have originated as a nickname for a short but powerfully built person, from the Old Norse personal name "Boltr". |

He married (1) SARAH JANE ROSE 1784 in Cumberland Co., Maine. She was born Bet. 1760 - 1765. He married (2) NANCY ANN ?? Aft. 1807. She died Aft. 1840. Notes
for LEMUEL ROSE BOLTER: Children
of LEMUEL BOLTER and SARAH ROSE are: Note: info on the two "Boy Bolter's" listed above is the based on the 1800 NY census. By 1810 only one son is listed on the census. Research indicates that Alexander was born in 1807 - based on that info I have concluded that the two male youths listed on the 1800 census must have died before the 1810 census. |

Generation No. 5 5. ALEXANDER FLOOD5 BOLTER (LEMUEL ROSE4, LEONARD3, LEONARD2, UNKNOWN1) was born February 14, 1807 in Camillus, Onondaga Co., New York, and died June 23, 1879 in Logan, Harrison Co., Iowa. He married (1) NANCY SHIVEL 1831, daughter of SAMUEL SHIVEL and MARY ??. She was born Abt. 1810, and died 1832 in Michigan. He married (2) EXPERIENCE S. LOWE July 6, 1835 in Elkhart County, Indiana. She was born Abt. 1819 in New York, (whether divorce or death ended this union is unknown. Year and/ or location of death are unknown. I would guess she died while married and that her death year estimate is or before 1853). Alexander married (3) NANCY DYER (DIER) October 23, 1853 in Edwardsburg, Cass Co., Michigan. She was born Abt. 1808 (whether divorce or death ended this union is unknown. Year and/ or location of death are unknown). He married (4) CELIA JANE HATFIELD April 14, 1858 in Cass Co., Michigan, daughter of WILLIAM HATFIELD and REBECCA LEWIS. She was born Abt. 1825 in Ohio, and died Aft. 1880 in Logan, Harrison Co., Iowa. Note: Alexander was married at least four times. I have copies of marriage licenses for Celia Jane Hatfield and Nancy Dyer (click on names to see certificates). Both of those marriages took place in Cass Co., Michigan. The marriage to Experience Lowe took place in Elkhart County, Indiana (which is just across the Michigan border). His marriage to Nancy Shivel could have taken place in Ohio or Michigan. The 1830 census has Alexander and a female living in Richland Co., Ohio (the age of that woman fits Nancy's age at that time). Nancy's headstone, located in Mottville, St. Joseph Co., Michigan (just to the east of Cass Co.) has her year of death etched as 1832 (as well as saying that she was the mother of L R Bolter). However, on her son, L R Bolter's grave stone his birth year is etched as 1834. Obviously, that is impossible. Interestingly, on the 1850 Cass Co., Michigan census Lemuel's age is listed as 19. That would make his birth year abt. 1831 (making his birth a mathematic possibility). However, by the 1870 Harrison Co., Iowa census his age is listed as 35, that would make his birth year abt. 1835. That again, makes it impossible for Nancy Shivel to be his mother. I suspect that Nancy is his mother and that his true birth year is probably about 1831. (With a census, that only lists a persons age [some census' list the month of birth too]- an 'about' estimate is the best that one can do - that is, based on the fact that the census could have been taken before or after a person's actual birthday.) Excerpt from: Cassopolis Vigilant Newspaper/ Necrology, June 24, 1880: "ALEXANDER BOLTER, formerly of Porter, this county, and father of Lemuel R. Bolter, died at his residence in Harrison county, Iowa, June 23, 1879, about the 70th year of his age. Mr. B. was an early settler in the vicinity of Shavehead Prairie, and was remarkable for his eccentricities, one of which is well remembered by all lovers of funny anecdotes, in connection with his second marriage to a young maid which occurred after Mr. Bolter had passed the age of 60 years." - The same quote later appeared in the Pioneer Society of Michigan,Vol #4 pg 227. Excerpt from: History of Cass County, Michigan, published by Waterman, Watkins & Co., Chicago in 1882, Reminiscences, page 312: ...Among the pioneers was one named Alexander Bolter, who was noted chiefly for his indolence, drollery, and love for something stimulating. He was a chronic borrower, and always had the most plausible excuse for repeating, time after time, his borrowing pilgrimages, and was uniformly successful in getting what he wanted, although the lenders declared each time should be the last; he always had prospects of big crops and good times in the future, and none could withstand his logic and witticisms. Stopping overnight at a tavern, he inquired the amount of his bill, and was told "nothing". "But you cannot live keeping tavern this way," exclaimsBolter, and the less they wanted pay the more persistent he became in his desire to pay, and at last 75 cents was mentioned as the amount of his indebtedness, when Bolter told them, with a much sang-froid as if a millionaire, to "charge it," and it is needless to say he never met this bill. He moved to Iowa, where he deceased. |

Notes
for ALEXANDER FLOOD BOLTER:
During the early 1830's Alexander and his father, Lemuel, lived in Richland Co., Ohio (per the 1830 census). After leaving Ohio he, his father and family moved to Cass Co. Michigan. Several deeds of property owned by Lemuel Sr., Alexander and Lemuel Jr. are listed in the Register of Deeds at the Cass County courthouse in Michigan. After leaving Michigan Alexander (his wife Celia Jane and many of his children) moved to the Logan, Harrison Co., Iowa area. While living in Iowa his occupation is listed as a farmer. As of yet, I have not located any proof that Alexander owned any land himself, although his son Lemuel owned a large quantity of land in Harrison County. Alexander is buried at Bethel Cemetery in Logan, Harrison Co., Iowa and shares a headstone with his daughter Nancy.

Notes
for CELIA JANE HATFIELD: Oral history indicates that Celia Jane was, at the least, part Indian. Some time after Alexander Bolter died in 1879 - Celia Jane moved to the poor farm located in Boyer Township, Harrison County, Iowa. She was tracked to the poor farm in 1880. The poor farm burned down in about 1890. She may have died in the fire, but there are no records supporting that speculation. |

Generation No. 6 6. LEMUEL ROSE6 BOLTER (ALEXANDER FLOOD5, LEMUEL ROSE4, LEONARD3, LEONARD2, UNKNOWN1) was born July 27, 1834 in Richland Co., Ohio, and died April 29, 1901 in Logan, Harrison Co., Iowa. He married CAROLINE JANE RINEHART March 31, 1856 in Cass County, Michigan, daughter of JOHN RINEHART and PARTHENIA LAWSON. She was born April 25, 1839 in Michigan, and died April 04, 1899 in Logan, Harrison Co., Iowa. Notes for LEMUEL ROSE BOLTER: In 1865 Elected to a seat in the House of Representatives of Iowa. Also served in the same capacity in the 15 through 20 General Assembles. Also elected State Senator serving in the 21 through 24 General Assembles. Served as a Democrat in only a few offices. Lemuel formed a law firm known as L. R. Bolter & Sons - both Charles R. and Carroll A. Bolter practiced law with their father at the firm. To see the Senator's family home click here. Per 1900 census - Lemuel is a widower with a house keeper named Melanie (sp) Rinehart - she is also listed as a widower - b. Nov. 1848 in Michigan/ Father from Virginia / Mother from Ohio. Caroline has a sister named R. Melcinia Rinehart - that said, my theory doesn't explain why a widower in that era would still be using her maiden name. Perhaps the Senator did not want rumors to run wild about him living with a single woman. Or, perhaps my theory is wrong. Also listed on the 1900 census, as living in Lemuel's home, was a domestic servant named Camie (SP) Newcomb - she is also a widower - b. July 1877 in Iowa/ Father from Wisconsin/ Mother from Indiana. For more detail on Lemuel's life and political experiences go to the Harrison Co., Iowa genealogy site |

Sarah is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Omaha, NE. Notes for BENJAMIN FRANK BOLTER: Researcher rumors indicates that Benjamin was a heavy drinker and did not work on a regular basis. And that, his half-brother, Lemuel (the Senator) had little or nothing to do with him. Additionally, Benjamin nor his brother full-blooded brother Noah, are mentioned in any of the Harrison Co. history books when referring to Lemuel's family history. Children

Benjamin's birth date as March 1886. It also says that he was born in

certificates many of his children say he was born in Rosedale, KS, I
suspect that the census taker was given misinformation. |
